As insurance professionals, we naturally want to protect our clients’ financial well-being, and an important part of that role is making sure clients’ loved ones are protected with life insurance should they die prematurely.

But according to LIMRA, a full 30 percent of adult Americans have no life insurance coverage at all.¹

Reversing that trend is the premise of September’s Life Insurance Awareness Month (LIAM). Life Happens, the organization that founded and has coordinated LIAM for the last 10 years, creates tools and resources for agents and other financial professionals to use with their clients and prospects during LIAM and beyond.

Importantly, in an effort to gain national attention and elevate awareness during LIAM, Life Happens chooses a high-profile spokesperson each year to share their personal story of loss and life insurance. This year’s spokesperson is legendary athlete Boomer Esiason.

You may know Esiason from his days on the gridiron. Playing for the Cincinnati Browns, the New York Jets, and the Arizona Cardinals, he made his mark as one of the most successful quarterbacks in NFL history. Or you may tune into his nationally syndicated radio show, “Boomer & Carton.” That’s the “celebrity” Boomer.

The “everyday” Boomer is a caring husband and dad who speaks eloquently about the power of life insurance. This is because when he was just seven years old, his mother Irene died of cancer without any life insurance. What had been a typical middle-class suburban upbringing was suddenly turned upside down.

His father Norman struggled not only with his grief, but also with keeping the finances, work, home, and kids in balance. “When a parent dies and there’s no life insurance, life becomes very tough, very fast,” says Boomer. “My dad, two sisters and I experienced that financial hardship firsthand when my mom died.”

As we now know, Boomer was able to leverage his talent for football and turn it into the successful career he has today. However, this early life lesson stayed with him, which is why he is now such a staunch advocate of life insurance and this year’s spokesperson for Life Insurance Awareness Month.
